In November we saw back to back lettings of two prime retail units on King Street, Belper which is the town’s main shopping thoroughfare.
At the start of the month we successfully agreed a new letting to Derbyshire Wildlife Trust who took 1,000sq.ft of accommodation at 6 King Street next door to Wilko’s. This move represented the charities first retail outlet with further branches expected to follow in 2018.
On the strength of the interest generated in this property we were then able to quickly secure a tenant for 2 King Street. This retail unit was let to local entrepreneur, Emma Auger who relocated the popular ladies fashion retailer ‘This Boutique’ from the neighbouring village of Duffield just in time for the Belper Farmers Market.
These lettings show that Belper is going against the grain slightly with similar Derbyshire Market towns such as Ilkeston and Ripley not fairing as well in terms of high street vacancies. The town is relatively compact which helps, and it provides a good range of quality local and independent traders alongside some of the more noticeable high street chains. This means that the town boasts a diverse mix of stores which in turn caters for shoppers of all age groups.
Senior Agency Surveyor, Chris Keogh commented on the recent success ‘The two deals at King Street demonstrate the popularity for retail units in Belper and as these things tend to happen, after we had agreed both deals we were still inundated with tenant requirements for this area.’
‘I am sure that both tenants will be great for Belper and will help to provide a more diverse range of shops for the local people and we wish them the best of luck.’
